The MTV Video Music Awards is known for drama — but aside from one seriously weird Aretha Franklin tribute from Madonna, this year’s ceremony was actually pretty tame. Even the feud between Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott didn’t result in any on-screen awkwardness.

If you didn’t catch the 2½-hour telecast Monday night, here are all the highlights you need to know. (A complete list of winners and nominees is below.)
1) That Madonna speech.
Madonna apparently missed the memo that when you honor someone . . . you have to talk about them more than you talk about yourself. That did not happen during the pop star’s tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, as she went on about her own career struggles and triumphs, while her few mentions of the Queen of Soul looked like an afterthought. Read more about it here.
2) Plenty of footage of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.
Did you know that pop star Ariana Grande and “Saturday Night Live” comedian Pete Davidson are in love? If this fact somehow escaped you this summer, you would have no doubts after their PDA at the VMAs. Still acting like two crazy kids who got engaged after dating for three weeks, they were all over each other on the red carpet and cuddled together in their seats. The camera crew noticed, and made sure to get lots of reaction shots.

(CNN)Jenny from the block is now a part of MTV history.
Jennifer Lopez on Monday accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City, with a rousing performance that took viewers through her two decades of discography, from her debut album “On the 6” to her most recent effort, “Dinero.” It was Lopez’s first time performing on the award show since 2001. A clearly emotional Lopez called the award “a tremendous honor.”

“It has been an incredible journey of dreaming my wildest dreams and then kind of watching them come true,” Lopez said in her speech.Image result for Jennifer Lopez rocks VMAs with journey through her musical past Lopez thanked her children, long-time management team and boyfriend Alex Rodriguez. The singer and actress also nodded to her fans, whom she said “have touched my heart and my soul and become a part of me.”
“You guys have won me over forever,” she said. Past recipients of the Vanguard award include Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Beyoncé. Lopez, who has over 80 million records worldwide, according to MTV, is the first Latin artist to receive the award.

LeBron James hasn’t responded to a shot about his intelligence from President Donald Trump, but Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and other fellow NBA players took to Twitter to defend him.

Trump took aim at James in a tweet on Friday night, days after an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon aired in which the Los Angeles Lakers star said he felt that Trump was “using sports to kinda divide us.”
“Sports has never been something that divides people,” James told Lemon. “It’s always been something that brings someone together.”
Trump also appeared to take sides in the LeBron vs. Jordan debate, saying, “I like Mike!”
Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Hornets, issued a statement Saturday backing James.
“I support LJ,” Jordan said in the statement. “He’s doing an amazing job for his community.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who was at the league’s NBA Africa Game on Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa, commended James for his work on and off the court.
“LeBron James is one of the all-time greatest NBA players and one of the most accomplished athletes,” Silver told USA Today. “He runs a very successful media company. He’s sent hundreds of students to college and just opened a school in Akron where at-risk students will receive free tuition, meals and transportation.
“I greatly admire his intelligence and business acumen and have enormous respect and appreciation for what he does in his community.”
Other players from around the league, including Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns and Utah’s Donovan Mitchell, came to James’ defense on social media after Trump’s tweet.

Scientists have found that goats are drawn to humans with happy facial expressions.
The result suggests a wider range of animals can read people's moods than was previously thought.
The team showed goats pairs of photos of the same person, one of them featuring an angry expression, and the other a happy demeanour.
The goats in the study made a beeline for the happy faces, the researchers report in the journal Open Science.
The result implies that the ability of animals to perceive human facial cues is not limited to those with a long history of working as human companions, such as dogs and horses.
Instead, it seems, animals domesticated for food production, such as goats, can also decipher human facial cues.
The study was carried out at the Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats in Kent, UK.
Co-author Dr Alan McElligott, from Queen Mary, University of London, and colleagues set up pairs of black-and-white photos about 1.3m apart on one wall in their test area.
Then, a goat would be let loose to explore the set-up.

Doe eyes

The researchers found that the goats strongly preferred the smiling faces, approaching the happy faces before acknowledging the angry photos. They also spent more time examining the smiling faces with their snouts.
But the effect was only significant when the happy-faced photo was placed on the right-hand side.
When the happy photos were placed on the left, the goats showed no significant preference either way.
The researchers think this is because the goats are using one side of their brain to process the information - something that's seen in other animals.
It could either be that the left side of the brain processes positive emotions, or that the right side of the brain is involved in avoidance of angry faces.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has softened planned pension changes following angry protests and a slump in his approval rating.
He said the retirement age for women would be increased from 55 to 60 instead of to 63. But a five-year increase for men, to 65, would stay.
Mr Putin said the country's working-age population was shrinking, making change essential.
Unions have warned that many will not live long enough to claim a pension.
Russian men have a life expectancy of 66 while for women it is 77, the World Health Organization says.
The issue has seen support for Mr Putin fall to 64% from 80%, according to VTsIOM state pollster.
Mr Putin said the move to raise the retirement age for men and women had been delayed for years and risked causing inflation and increasing poverty.
Postponing it further would threaten the stability and security of Russian society, he said.
"The tendencies we see today in the field of workforce productivity and demographics mean there is no time to waste," he said, according to a translation of his remarks by Russian state media.
"Our decisions should be just and well-balanced," he added.
Until his TV address he had attempted to distance himself from the row, and had in the past promised that the pension age would never be raised on his watch.

The legality of ruling Nepal Communist Party formed after the merger of CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre has once again been questioned with the Election Commission receiving a complaint that demands the party’s registration be scrapped.
Rishi Kattel, who heads a small party with the same name, has filed the application claiming the party jointly led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal attacked his party’s existence.
The issue had surfaced while the UML and the Maoist Centre announced the merger in May 2018. However, the Election Commission had made it easy for the ruling party by giving a different acronym.
Whereas Kattel’s party’s acronym is ‘NeKaPa’ in Nepali, the Commission had given the acronym of ‘Ne.Ka.Pa.’ (with dots) to the new party.
But now, Kattel claims the dots do not make it different as no one pronounces dots while reading the name.
Meanwhile, Kattel has also accused mass media of promoting the party formed on shaky legal grounds.
